董事會說，「他從來不出錯！」Trustees exclaimed, “ He never bungles！”
於是派他遠赴叢林去工作。And sent him off to distant jungles.
營帳就撘在熱帶河邊，Camped on a tropic riverside,
有一天新娘子突然不見。one day he missed his loving bride.
後來嚮導說，她的命斷送 She had, the guide informed him later,
在一條短嘴鱷魚肚腹中。Been eaten by an alligator.
闕斯德教授忍不住笑到：professor Twist could not but smile.
「你應該講長吻鱷魚才好。」“ You mean, ” he said, “ a crocodile.”
賞析：詩中闕教授的新婚嬌妻失蹤了，他竟仍舊汲汲於為鱷魚的長刎或短吻辯正。這位「一絲不苟」的科學家，他的心可是肉做的？其實，他在力求「精準」之際，卻已經大大扭曲了人生的真相了。
